Gyula Berger (HU) & Roos van Berkel (NL)
Your Body – MY Landscape
Opening Night:  25th, 26th October 8 pm, Jurányi

‘Your body – My landscape’ is the first choreographic collaboration between Gyula Berger (Hungary) and Roos van Berkel (The Netherlands). This cross-cultural project promotes transdisciplinary exchange between Dutch and Hungarian artists from different generations, professional backgrounds and educational institutions.

I take a walk through your body’s landscape
You allow, you expose,
Where necessary, I intrude

Let’s put on big brown boots and ask each other to dance...

As children of our age, we see a world where insecurity triumphs. The open borders of Europe collide with the consequences of the economic crisis, which seems to allow free play for individual insecurity and collective hatred. We want to play a game where we look for a new valuation: one of the individual body as a container of experiences. Experiences with a collective value because they are connected to many different people and many different places. Experiences that form its own landscape in the body – a landscape where the sun rises behind the mountain of the everlasting party and a siren swims through a sea of tears.
During this duet, Gyula Berger and Roos van Berkel will focus on discovering the landscape of each other’s bodies and they will invite one another into looking at the world from another point of view because of the opposition in gender, the 20 years of age difference and the fact that Gyula and Roos have been born and raised on opposite sides of Europe in different political situations.

Gyula Berger (HU) has been making work in Hungary for the past 25 years. He entered the Hungarian dance scene in 1984 with his own modern dance group ‘Berger Dance Company’. At the time, this was the only professional dance company that tried to establish modern dance in Hungary without official support but on aregular basis. His thirst for finding new ways of moving and composing took him to the European Dance Development Center in Arnhem in 1994. When he returned to Hungary in 1997 he founded his second dance company, Zéró Balett. He was a founding member of L1 Independent Dancers Partnership, a unique collective of 7 choreographers which was active between 2000 and 2010. During these years he had a close collaboration with another L1-member, Márta Ladjánszki and they created several works together. Gyula now works with his own dance company Zéró Balett as well as collaborative projects with other artists and continues to teach his self-developed dance technique called ‘Body Friendly Technique’.
